Our Commitment

Atlantic Retina Center is committed to a website that works for the widest possible range of patients, referring providers, and visitors, regardless of the technology or ability they bring to it. Across our offices on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and in central and southern Delaware, we follow established standards and guidelines to keep atlanticretina.com accessible and straightforward to use.

Website Standards

Our site is built to conform with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). We work toward Level AA compliance throughout, and Level AAA compliance wherever it is practicable for the page.

Structure & Code

Screen reader compatibility: Our website is built to work with screen reading software, so visitors who are blind or visually impaired can navigate it comfortably.
Standards-based code: The site is coded to W3C standards for HTML and CSS, so it displays correctly in current browsers and is built to hold up in future ones.
ARIA landmarks: Key regions of each page carry ARIA landmarks so screen reader users can jump directly to the section they are looking for.
Headings & lists: Headings (h1 to h6) and lists (ol, ul, dl) use proper markup, so assistive technology can announce heading levels and let users move list to list or item to item.
Declared language: Each page's language is set in code, so speech synthesizers apply the right pronunciation and accent.
Well-formed markup: Elements are opened, closed, and nested correctly, with no duplicate attributes and no repeated IDs. That is the clean code assistive technology depends on to parse a page correctly.

Content & Media

Text alternatives: Aside from purely decorative images, every non-text element has a text alternative serving the same purpose, so a screen reader can present that information in place of the image.
CSS for presentation: Visual presentation, including size, color, font, and placement, is controlled through CSS, so visitors can adjust those characteristics through their own browser or user agent.
Resizable text: Text can be resized up to 200 percent without assistive technology and without losing content or functionality.
Text kept out of images: We avoid putting text inside raster images, so user agents can read on-page text aloud and apply custom style sheets to make it more legible.
No aggressive flashing: Pages do not contain anything that flashes more than three times per second, or flash content stays below general and red-flash thresholds.

Highlighting on focus: Most interactive elements on the site show a visible highlight when they receive keyboard focus.
Predictable focus behavior: Giving an element focus never triggers an unexpected change of context. No forms submit automatically, and no new windows open on their own.
Consistent navigation: Navigational elements appear in the same place across pages, so their location stays predictable site-wide.

Forms & Documents

Accessible forms: Form fields carry proper label markup, so screen readers can associate each label with its control and present the form clearly.
Form input errors: If a field is filled in incorrectly, the field is identified and the issue is explained in text, not indicated by color alone.

Exceptions

We hold atlanticretina.com to the highest practicable standard, but full conformance is not always achievable across every page or piece of media on the site.

Future Efforts

We are continuing to work toward full Level AA and Level AAA conformance with the WCAG guidelines, as practicable, and we revisit that work as we publish new content and add providers to the site.
